The Leader In Biometric Access Control & Security

Modifying technology to suit the application

Posted on March 8, 2012 by Leave a comment

Those who have done business with Digitus Biometrics already know that our company is “modeled” as an engineering and design firm.  We have a core staff of engineering and design talent that is focused on the application of our biometric access control platform.  All non-core functions at Digitus are outsourced.  As an example, we do not have a direct sales force.  We depend on others to take us to market.

We believe this model has served our customers well and will continue to serve them will into the future.  It enables us to keep our costs down and remain flexible and quick to act on new applications.  Because of the inherent architecture, our technology platform is flexible and modifiable.  As we continue on our quest to lower the cost of our products and shrink the profile, we hope to be introduced to new and exciting applications for our biometric access control platform.  Please feel free to bring us your ideas for potential applications. We’d love to explore them with you.

The cost of biometric access control at the server cabinet level is coming down

I’m constantly hearing customer feedback and incorporating it into our business when possible. One piece of feedback that comes through loud and clear is the need to bring down the cost of access control in the data center.

With the announcement of two new configurations of our db ServerRack Access Control technology, we prove we listen to our customers. The db Bus Cabinet-level biometrics is a one of the new configurations. This configuration consists of a single control unit and power supply for up to 64 cabinets (an unlimited number of control units can be installed to expand the number of cabinets be secured). It allows for one or two db BioLocks per cabinet, along with up to four additional sensors, for panels and doors. The cost ranges from $680 to $1100 per cabinet, based on the number of cabinets and the number of BioLocks per cabinet.

The second new configuration is the db Bus End-of –row biometrics. This new configuration places the biometric authentication at the end of a row or group of cabinets. It consists of a single control unit, a power supply, and an Enline reader that houses the biometric reader. Each control unit can manage up to 64 cabinets. The cost to secure each cabinet with this configuration ranges from $440 to $775, depending on the number of eLocks needed on each cabinet.

Our mission at Digitus is to continue to drive down the cost of access control. We are also working to shrink the profile of our technology, making our technology available to a wider range of applications.

Distilling Compliance Issues in the Data Center

server room Let’s face it. The list of government and accounting regulations targeting the data center, both public and private, are numbing. PCI DSS, SSAE16, FISMA, and HIPAA are a few of the numbers and acronyms on this list that you have to comply with. Your challenge is trying to find a set of published recommendations that a data center can follow to be “compliant” in the eyes of an auditor or whoever may want to challenge your efforts to provide a reasonable solution to data center security/access.

I’ve had many conversations with accounting and auditing firms and have concluded that there are four key data center compliance considerations. Is your data center able to:

  1. Control physical access to information,
  2. Monitor, in real time, when a party is accessing data,
  3. Provide real-time alerts to key people if an event occurs, and
  4. Produce an accurate and objective audit trail of data center access activity

Today, auditors are looking to ensure that data centers have taken the “necessary reasonable steps” to secure data center information. Knowing that your data center complies with these critical requirements will give you the assurance that you will pass the “necessary reasonable steps” test and help avoid any potential financial penalties associated with a failed audit.

Any data center access solution needs to be accurate in its reporting. Our solutions have never produced a “false positive”, giving our customers an “indisputable audit trail” that auditors admire. Every day, we look at the solutions we’ve designed, developed, and deployed and ask if they address the four key considerations. Our solution is one of the best, if not the best in the industry. Even our competitors acknowledge our solution as superior!
